We have a super spanking new website and a blog to go with it! It’s been quite a ride. We have our app ready to go for approval to the gods at Google and Apple. We are starting to see lots of interest in what we’re doing here and we’re gearing up for an exciting unveiling at HR Tech in the Startup Pavilion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more I talk about SkillProfile to potential users, investors and other really smart people the more excited I get to get it off the ground and start iterating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Couple things I’ve learned and most will not be surprising:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 – When in doubt, just do it. Seth Godin has been saying for years “Just keep shipping and you can’t help but get better”. He’s right. We started with a design that was pretty solid and then we started iterating. We’re not done by any stretch but you have to start or you’ll never realize your dreams. Make it so, number one

2 – Things always take longer and more investment than you think. Startup founders and others always say this. It is undoubtedly true! – I am fortunate that this is not my first business venture so I learned some very hard lessons. I was hoping to ship my app back in May, but as these things do it just took longer. Plan for it

3 – Along the same lines though is that you always need to have a due date. Every project I’ve run, every product I’ve shipped would not have even come close to being launched if there wasn’t a date on the line. Sometimes it’s an artificial date (like my May timeframe) or sometimes it’s a hard date, like the HR Tech conference. But you always need a date so you can keep driving toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 – Ask for guidance and help. I am fortunate to have 2 really supportive and wonderful co-founders and they have given guidance, collaborated and given their sweat equity into the project. Ask for help, take suggestions and see guidance from people who’ve been down this road. It makes you smarter and it makes your product better.

5 – Never underestimate people. I have some development partners and friends who are building and helping and I’m helping them grow their skills, get some expertise and they’re helping me to get this thing launched. It wouldn’t happen without them. My guidance is always be thankful and remember to reward the people who helped you when they didn’t have to. I’ve been fortunate to have people take chances on me when I was earlier in my career and give me opportunities professionally and I hope to be able to pay it forward (or back, whichever way that goes). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
